    Description

Known as a tupu or topo, this large silver spoon-shaped cloak pin is Spanish Colonial.  Tupos/Tupus are found in the Andean regions of South America and crafted by indigenous silver workers from locally mined silver and are used to this day by indigenous populations as a closure on shawls or other woven fabrics, and the amount of ornamentation signified the wealth of the wearer.  Hand hammered of silver, the large spoon shaped top is decorated with floral and foliate designs, and the edges of the spoon are decorated with marks made to resemble rope turnings.  The shaft tapers to a sharp point for piercing the clothing. This is an exceptionally large tupu in very good condition.  It has some spots of tarnish visible.  Dates from late 19th to early 20th century.
    Length: 11 1/2 Inches; Width: 2 1/4 Inches.  Weight 93 gm.
