Description
Rookwood Scenic Landscape Vellum Vase 1917, Round Vase Frederick Rothenbusch.I am the archivist for Scott Hyde, a photographer born in 1926 and a resident of NYC from 1947-1987. He is a Guggenheim Fellow (1965) and represented in the collections of every major museum in NYC and many around the world. From the information I have, I believe this vase was partial payment for a commercial photography job done for the Jordan-Volpe Gallery in 1980. The “Ode to Nature: Flowers and Landscapes of the Rookwood Pottery 1880-1940” catalog was photographed by Scott. He frequently did partial payments in trade. He had a “Flying Pizza” drawing from Claus Oldenburg and an original concept sketch for “Store Windows” by Christo as a result of such trades. They were sold off years ago, I know the Oldenburg went to buy a car. We do have photos of them though.

Artist:
Frederick Rothenbusch was born in Cincinnati Ohio, and he attended the Cincinnati Art Academy. He decorated pottery at Rookwood Pottery for many years, from 1896 through 1931. His work appears to have been completely done in vellum Glaze, including some very large vases and plaques, executed beautifully and often with landscapes. Collector interest in his pieces is considered to be above average.
Condition:
As a lay-person, I cannot speak to the official condition of the piece. Please look at all images for details. Personally, I think it’s a beautiful piece. It was kept in a China cabinet for all the years I’ve worked for Scott. I believe it lived there for the many decades in which he owned the piece.
Shipping:
The vase will be extremely well-packed, sent via USPS, with insurance enough to cover the purchase price.
Dimensions:
Height: 7.75 inches
Diameter: 3.25 inches/3.5 inches
