Description
This is a beautiful Cameo glaze footed bowl hand decorated by Artus Van Briggle in 1887. This may have been his first piece that he decorated at Rookwood.Artus Van Briggle was born in Felicity, Ohio on March 21, 1869. He moved to Cincinnati in 1886, and he apprenticed at Avon Pottery. He Joined Rookwood Pottery in 1887. He left in 1901 for Colorado Springs due to poor health. It was there that he created his own pottery company, Van Briggle Pottery. Artus's success was short lived, for he died on July 4, 1904 at the age of 35. His career was short, and his works are considered rare. At Rookwood, most of his work was highly detailed portrait work in Standard Glaze, while his own work was much more organic in nature.
The combination of gray and tan set a nice tone as the background on this footed bowl. The swirls that are on the outside of the bowl add a level of depth to the piece. The white mums on the interior of the bowl are executed extremely well and are very realistic. A beautiful piece that is fairly hard to find. A very impressive example of this bowl and a pleasure to admire.
Exceptional bowl in original condition that has no chips, no cracks, no scratches to glaze and free from crazing and repairs. Any non-perfections are from the firing/manufacturing process.
Authentic and signed appropriately with the Rookwood symbol and shape number. Artist signed Artus Van Briggle. All images are original and un-edited.
