Description
ROOKWOOD BOOKENDS - DUSTY ROSE "ENRAPTURED READER"Here are two extremely handsome bookends in a desirable dusty-rose color. Each shows a young adult female, sitting in a relaxed posture, engrossed in a book. Each is 7" wide by 5" deep by 7" tall.
Each bears the Rookwood mark on the bottom, one for the year 1921, the other for the year 1922, together with the shape number 2184. This variation in year marks could mean any one of several things: (1) The bookends were made at the end of one year, beginning of another so that one bears the mark for one year and the second the mark of the other; (2) One of the bookends was misdated; or (3) The bookends were made at separate times and were later united as a set. Which it is, I am not sure, but the bookends display as a pair, so I'm guessing it's probably (1) or (2) because the color is so specific. The bottoms of both bookends are shown in the photographs, so you can see what you think.
According to some accounts, this shape was the first of the Rookwood bookend designs, dating from 1916, I offer this only as something I read on an auction website.
CONDITION:
The bookends appear to be in excellent condition.
There are no breaks or cracks. The variations in color and the seeming "dirt of ages" in certain folds are characteristics of the manufacturing process that deliberately tried to give an "artistic, aged" appearance.
Be sure to examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description and show the wonderful detail and scale. There are some color variations on the bottom and edges - you can see the examples in the photographs. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of item description.
SHIPPING:
This item, properly packed, will be shipped only within the United States. Note that these large bookends are very heavy for their size and require special packing and handling. Please ask any questions in advance of bidding as there are no returns unless you and I agree that there are errors in the description.
NOTE:
Please ask any questions prior to bidding, as there will be no returns unless Buyer and Seller agree that there is serious error or misrepresentation in this listing. Please examine the photographs, as they are of the actual item on offer and form part of the item description.
These bookends are artistic enough to display as sculpture and heavy enough to use as bookends. Either way, they are exceptional pieces of Rookwood art pottery, which means they figure among the best ever made. They would make a significant addition to any collection of Rookwood, Arts & Crafts pottery, or antique bookends.
