    Welcome to
    Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for a lovely Rookwood Art Pottery standard glaze vase decorated by Marie Rauchfuss and dated 1897. This nice bottle shaped vase has a chocolate brown background that shades to a rust color on the lower back. The vase is decorated with a golden-rust colored flower above long slender light olive colored stems with brownish-olive foliage and is finished in the a standard glaze. The base is marked with the incised Rookwood Pottery RP flame trademark stamp with dates the vase to 1897 and has incised style number "304C" with decorator's cipher of Marie Rauchfuss who is recorded to have worked at Rookwood for only one year.
Measures 8" high with an overall width of 4 1/4" and a base diameter of 2 3/8".  Weighs 1.0 pound.
This nice vase is in very good to excellent Estate condition with no major flaws. There is a very faint surface scratch on the lower neck, a tiny raised bubble on the back and a popped bubble on the neck which both occurred during firing with the glaze applied on top (see photos). There is also faint crazing on this vase.
The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded by Maria Longworth Nichols in 1880 and won numerous prestigious awards with their early pottery.  However, over the years she became less involved with the company and in 1890 the Rookwood Pottery Company was reorganized with William Taylor becoming President.  Rookwood is considered the premier name in American Art Pottery and even the more common pieces of the production ware period are collected for their elegant beauty. The Depression was difficult for the Rookwood factory although they continued to operate until 1967 when the factory was finally forced to close.
