Description
Greetings from Estate Art and Collectiblesin beautiful Palm Beach, Florida!
For your consideration we are offering for sale on buy it now a rare opportunity to get a VERY early and rare Rookwood Pottery salad bowl. This piece is numbered 166C. They only sold 66 of these bowls back then in 4 different sizes, so who knows how many are left after over 130 years. Could this be the only one to survive? A fine example signed by one of their top artists, Laura A. Fry. Regarding the marks:
The single flame over the RP designates 1887.
166 is the piece number.
C is the size of the bowl. The middle size.
The R designates it is made from Red Clay.
LAF is the artist monogram.
The bowl measures 8 inches across and 2 1/2 tall. As to condition, you have seen the blemish in the corner. This appears to be a repair to a crack that was formed in the original firing. It is completely under the original glaze, so it is not the result of damage after the factory. The bowl has a good "ring" to it when tapped, and if it had cracked while in use it would go "thud". The 1/2 inch rub on the rim next to it could be a chip, but it looks to us to be a glaze firing pop. We find it hard to be definitive on this one. The bowl has some very light and small crazing.
These early pieces do not come to market that often. It is a piece for a serious collector, don't miss it!!
A very special plate, we don't know the pattern. It is in excellent plus condition, almost unused. It measures just below 11 inches across.
Please check out all the photos. From a Palm Beach estate.
